However, the AMOC is under threat of collapse, which could change Europe's climate up to 10 times faster than expected. This raises a deeper question: why are we not doing more to monitor and understand this system?
Personally, I think the AMOC is a fascinating and complex system that is crucial to our understanding of climate change. What makes this particularly fascinating is the potential for an AMOC collapse to have such a dramatic impact on our daily lives. In my opinion, we need to take a step back and think about the broader implications of this issue. If we don't act boldly to limit climate change, we may be faced with an AMOC collapse that could have devastating consequences.
One thing that immediately stands out is the lack of funding for AMOC monitoring. The cost of all AMoc monitoring adds up to about €25m a year, which is a small price to pay for one of the world's most important climate monitoring systems. What many people don't realize is that the AMOC is more imminent and likely than we think, and we need to do more to understand and monitor it.
From my perspective, the AMOC is a critical component of our climate system, and we need to do more to protect it. The Trump administration's proposed budget cuts to NASA, NOAA, and NSF, which provide about 50% of the total AMOC monitoring budget, are concerning. We need to collaborate to assure long-term continuation of AMOC monitoring before it is lost.
A detail that I find especially interesting is the potential for an AMOC collapse to become a reality. This raises a deeper question: what can we do to prevent this from happening? In my opinion, we need to take a more proactive approach to climate change and do more to protect the AMOC.
