Thru-Hiking the AT: Day 117 at The Om Dome - Resupply, Relaxation, and Trail Magic (2026)

The Om Dome: A Hiker's Paradise

As I stepped out of the shelter at 4 a.m., the crisp morning air filled my lungs, and the thought of the day's journey ahead excited me. The plan was simple: make it to the shuttle that would take me to the renowned The Om Dome hostel. With my shuttle not until 8:30 a.m., I had ample time to complete my short nearo into the hostel, a mere four miles through the challenging Sawyer Notch.

The climb was steep, but the breathtaking views and the sense of accomplishment that came with reaching the top made it all worthwhile. I was greeted by the friendly and punctual shuttle driver, Yukon, who had promised to be there at 6 a.m. We stopped at Mills Market, where I had planned to resupply, but the prices were exorbitant, sometimes double the regular rates. I decided to hold off and instead split a Walmart delivery with Yukon, which turned out to be a brilliant money-saving decision.

The Om Dome hostel is a haven for hikers, and I was thrilled to find it among my top five stops on the trail. The space is immaculate, with all the necessities and more. From cozy couches and chairs to hammocks for a good night's rest, every hiker's need is anticipated. The visit began with loaner clothes, laundry facilities, and a refreshing outdoor shower. I cooked quinoa for myself, taking advantage of the ample hiker supplies.

With my immediate needs met, I sat back and tackled the usual town tasks: resupply and anything requiring fast internet. Yukon, the hostel's host and shuttle driver, had prepared a delicious and generous dinner for everyone, ensuring no hiker went hungry. The meal was a testament to his understanding of hiker eating needs, offering a variety of options, including oatmeal with pumpkin, date, and walnut, fettucini with salad and rolls, watermelon, ice cream, cookies, pancakes, quinoa with sweet potato and onion, and egg and cheese bagels.

The Om Dome hostel is a shining example of how a well-run hostel can enhance the hiking experience. It provides a much-needed respite and a chance to recharge before the next leg of the journey. The generous food portions and the thoughtful amenities, such as loaner clothes and laundry facilities, make it a top choice for hikers seeking a comfortable and welcoming place to stay.

In my opinion, The Om Dome hostel is a must-visit for any hiker on the trail. It offers a unique blend of comfort, convenience, and community, making it a memorable and enjoyable part of the hiking experience. So, if you're ever in the area, be sure to stop by and treat yourself to a well-deserved break.
